The 171st winner of the 2000 Guineas, held on Saturday 5th May 1979 over the Rowley Mile, was Tap On Wood (20/1), a chestnut colt by Sallust out of Cat O'Mountaine, owned by Mr Tony Shead. The winner won by 1/2 a length in 1 minute 43.60 secs, with a short head back to the third. A field of 21 runners contested the race which was worth £55,840 (Equivalent to £294,800 in 2017)
